KEEP WOOD DALE MOVING
Intersection Study Phase I Update
The Irving Park Road, Wood Dale Road, and Metra track intersection study is well into Phase I of the project development. Six final design possibilities remain under consideration to alleviate traffic congestion and improve safety at the intersection. If a solution is not agreed upon, there is still a possibility that nothing will be built.
Project engineers are refining the intersection options and gathering the latest safety and congestion data for the site. The intersection has historically been identified by the state as a high accident location and new data indicates that recent improvements, although beneficial, have not solved its serious safety and congestion problems.
The intersection study team has begun meeting with Wood Dale community groups this summer, seeking community feedback on the remaining intersection possibilities. In June, city officials and project engineers met with the Wood Dale Seniors to present information about the six final construction possibilities and in July, the intersection team presented the project information to the Wood Dale Community Assistants Council and the Wood Dale Chamber of Commerce.
The community group engineering presentation includes recent data collected by traffic engineers which shows that more than 46,000 vehicles use the intersection each day and between 800 and 1,000 vehicles are delayed during rush hour. These delays also affect more than 30 emergency vehicles a day, including police, ambulance and fire trucks.
The intersection construction alternatives are on display all summer in the Wood Dale City Hall atrium, accompanied by comment cards allowing residents to indicate their preferred plan for the intersection. At a recent meeting with the Wood Dale Seniors Association, Matt Rempfer, an Intersection Study project engineer, discusses the safety and mobility issues that make the Irving Park, Wood Dale Road and Metra track intersection a high accident location.
