Officer Pat Ludwig (Handler) with K-9 Tom

The police department has a one officer who is the handler of K-9 "Tom".  Tom is the second Wood Dale Police K-9 replacing Enschi, who retired in 1999.  Tom is a male German Shepherd born July 1998 and weighs 96 pounds.

He trains often, never gives up, and without hesitation, would sacrifice his own life if it meant saving other officers, or his handler's life.  Tom searches for suspects in buildings, tracks people, sniffs out drugs, and is trained to apprehend suspects.  K-9 Tom is affectionate, intelligent, and a trustworthy member of the department.
