BUILDING SAFETY DIVISION
The Building Safety Division, a unit within the
Community Development Department, is responsible for
insuring that all structures located within the City are
safe for occupancy, and constructed in a structurally
sound manner. It further insures that all properties are
in compliance to the City of Wood Dale Municipal Code,
adopted Building Codes, and City Ordinances.
A Division Supervisor, a Permit Coordinator, a
Building Inspector, a part-time Electrical Inspector, a
part-time Plumbing Inspector, and three part-time
Fire-Safety Inspectors staff the Building Safety
Division (formerly Building Department). The staff is
responsible for all residential, commercial, and
industrial permit application processing, plan review,
inspection scheduling and field inspection operations,
including emergency response incidents.
Code compliance is verified by reviewing plans and
civil engineering, if required, for each proposed
project prior to permit issuance. The review process
assures that the proposed work is in agreement with all
City adopted codes and ordinances. Building Codes set
minimum construction standards; therefore, it is
important that each project is thoroughly reviewed and
inspected for full compliance. Once a permit is issued,
field inspectors inspect the project at various stages
in order to determine acceptability. The inspections act
as consumer protection to verify construction quality
and insure consumer value.
In an attempt to keep housing stock and commercial
structures safe and avoid disrepair, the Building Safety
Division supervises the Citywide Community Appearance
Program. All City employees are alert to report
conditions that appear in violation of City Codes and
Ordinances. Once reported, the Building Safety Division
investigates each report and takes action accordingly.
In recent years department staff has been involved in
many special projects and programs. One such program is
the O'Hare Soundproofing Program. Staff has reviewed
plans and inspected over 150 participating homes in
addition to daily activities.
The Building Safety Division is located in the lower
level of City Hall. Operating hours 8:30 am to 4:30 pm,
Monday through Friday, except holidays. Contact
telephone number is 630 / 766 - 5133. The department
offers numerous informational handouts detailing
construction requirements or planning aspects of many
residential projects. |
